And here are the questions she posed for the discussion:
For discussion, I would like to pose the following questions:
- As a Doctoral Nurse Practitioner in any healthcare setting, does pay for performance have an affect on the way nurses practice (or should practice) and their level of accountability in caring for the whole patient?
- Should practitioners and organizations receive financial incentives for providing higher quality of care? Please explain why.
- Based on your own experience, what should healthcare be monitoring and benchmarked against nationally to demonstrate quality of care for our patients?
- As Midwesterners, the states of Minnesota and Iowa are amongst the lowest for reimbursement by Medicare, yet amongst the highest for the provision of quality care as demonstrated by Medicare. Don’t we deserve more and if so, will a system like pay-for-performance get us there? If not, why and what other recommendations, from a social aspect, would you recommend to your legislators?
